President’s Letter
Dear fellow SDP members,
I am Kaye Singer, your new president and SDP’s
biggest ambassador, in spite of my short height of 5 feet, 1.75 inches!
I have met people who say, “You’re an accountant; you’re left-brained; you’re not supposed to be artistic and creative!” Well, I like a challenge. It’s not the first time I’ve stepped outside my comfort zone. My artsy lifestyle began when I took my first oil painting class at a studio owned by Ann Kingslan mda. The apples I painted on tracing paper were great, but when I tried to put them on a piece of wood I didn’t have the patience; I dropped out of painting altogether for half a dozen years until I discovered acrylics! It was the beginning of a love affair that has lasted nearly
40 years. Today, I dabble in oils, Genesis heat-set oils, watercolor, and colored pencil, along with acrylics. I have learned to have
patience, but I still can’t wait to see a finished piece! And, I still have that first tracing paper painting to remind me that good art comes with time.
One Saturday I was at Ye Ol’ Craft Shop in Omaha, Neb., searching out all the latest and greatest painting products when someone asked if I would like to join an SDP chapter meeting where a member was being honored for receiving her CDA certification. Of course, my curiosity was piqued and the next thing I knew I signed up to be a member and was excited to attend my first convention in Salt Lake City.
Members may wonder what my goals are as president of their Society. Top on my list is communication with chapters and members. I want

Another goal of mine is to review and update the Bylaws, as recommended by the Bylaws Committee. While SDP has tried to keep up with technology, we have not taken a serious look at our roots for a long time. Over the past few months we’ve received several comments about voting privileges. The Bylaws currently state that changes can be made by majority vote of members at the Annual Meeting. This is just one of the areas requiring review for potential update. The Bylaws are our operations guide having served us well for many years, but were written when the only way to vote was in person.
I like to travel and hope to visit chapters during the upcoming year. I might even have a brush in hand! If you happen to be in the Las Vegas area on the second Saturday of the month, I extend an invitation to “paint with the president” at my local chapter meeting.
