102 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 1, 2014
As I gazed into my backyard, my eyes fell on the beautiful finches that were flitting about. It so happened that the clematis was in full bloom. The stark
contrast of the yellow finches against the purple clematis brought out the creative juices in me, and my painting was born. Please enjoy the beautiful finches and clematis as much as I enjoyed painting them.
PREPARATION
Dust off the canvas, removing any particles that may be on the surface. Using the 1" glaze wash with Sap Green+Prussian Blue Hue, basecoat the surface of the canvas. Let dry completely. Apply the design to the sur- face. Note: You will be applying the design several times throughout the painting.
The light source in this painting is coming from the right; therefore, your highlights will be to your right. Given the bright color of the birds, there will be some sense of reflected light as well.
