President’s letter
Dear SDP Friends,
In this issue you will find the slate of candidates for the 2014 elections. Please read the biographies very carefully and exercise your right to vote.
The Nominating Committee spent many hours and made numerous phone calls to develop this slate. Being on the Nominating Committee is probably one of the toughest committee jobs in the Society. According to our bylaws: “There shall be a Nominating Committee composed of five (5) members who shall hold individual membership in the Society at the time of election or appointment; three (3) of whom shall be elected by the members at the Annual Meeting for a term of one (1) year; one (1) who is selected by and from the immediately preceding Nominating Committee; and one (1) who is appointed as
Chairperson of the Committee by the President and approved by the Board of Directors.”
I am pleased to report to you that at the time of this writing the board and I have
just completed the toughest meeting of the year. In November, we spent long days for
the good part of a week in Wichita. During this meeting we went over the budget in detail—discussing cuts and additions. A preliminary packet of reports and an agenda were sent to each board member ahead of time as homework. Action items requested
by the committees were discussed and voted upon, old business was dealt with, and new business was brought forth. Members left with lengthy to-do lists. Each board member, with the assistance of a staff member, was assigned to work with one or more committees to fulfill their assigned mission.
To be a good board member it takes personal sacrifice to add hours of SDP work to your weekly schedule, but it also takes confidence in yourself and in each other. We don’t always agree; I’ve taken a turn at being outvoted. But, in general, we come to consensus. What is vitally important is that each board member be free to voice an opinion, disagree with an idea, or offer a better one. It is also important that our staff members are part of the process and members of the team. They handle not only daily operations, but take part in projects and future planning.
I’m pleased to report that this year’s board members have been willing and able. It’s hard work, but it’s also a privilege to work with a great team. At the end of the week we knew we had made progress. We know there is still a lot more to do, but you know that’s what the job is all about.
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” —Helen Keller (1880–1968)
