66 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 1, 2014
After reading in a quilt magazine how they used fabric pens and pencils on fabric to decorate quilts, I thought, “with all the pencils and pens I have, I
should be able to do this without buying new pencils and then not liking them.” I have painted on fabric for years and have done a few colored pencil and pen-and-ink pictures. So I started mixing things together and found that DecoArt SoSoft Transparent Fabric Medium would melt some brands of colored pencils. I discovered that Prismacolor and Prang were two brands that would work. I also tried numerous pens; some would bleed too much and some were not per- manent after washing the fabric, so this is my solution.
The first shirt I did was a Christmas shirt with Santa, reindeer, and snowmen. When I wore it, everyone wanted to know what I used because it was so soft. When I told them colored pencils they all asked “it’s washable?” I have taught that Christmas shirt at local chapters, and hope to teach a Texas Snowmen and Roadside Flowers workshop at future classes and conventions.
