Page 27 - The Decorative Painter Spring 2016
P. 27
surface out on tracing paper, trace the pattern, and apply. However, that may not result in perfection for one reason or another. ThTherefore, the pattern may have to be traced onto tracing paper that has been cut for one half of the rim surface, pattern traced onto paper, then transferred to rim surface, flflipped and traced to the other half of the rim surface. One other method is to trace only one quarter
of the pattern, transfer the pattern, and flflip it as you add the other three parts of the pattern to the rim surface.
STEP 1: Using a no. 2 round, paint the heart pattern following the tracing lines using Medium Beige.
STEP 2: Using a smaller brush (no. 10/0 or no. 2 short liner), outline both sides of the linework that was painted in Step 1 with Off-White Back- ground Mix. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to give extra opaqueness and texture. STEP 3: Using the same small liner, add the Offff-White Background Mix inside hearts, C-strokes, and cross-hatching. I recommend this be freehanded.
FINISHING TOUCHES
Touch up and refine any linework or areas that need
more highlight or shadows. Let painting dry at least over-
night. Tinted colors are softly applied as the plate is being turned on the lazy Susan. This technique sets the scene and painting into the background, adds warmth to the designs,
and melds the colors of the plate together for harmony. DecoArt Extender & Blending Medium is washed on the plate for wet-on- wet application of tints. Colors are sideloaded onto the edge of the brush and worked out on the palette so there is a natural pro- gression of color to clear coming off the brush. Use a 3⁄4" wash brush or larger for each tint and clean brush aftfter each color has been ap- plied. Let each tint application dry before adding a new tint layer.
TINT AREAS AND COLORS
With paint side of brush resting on rim bead, wash a tint of Dioxazine Purple around the plate. Inside rim surface with brush resting on edge is Permanent Alizarin Crimson. Inside surface (scene) ground area is Quinacridone Gold. Entire outer edge of scene area is Permanent Alizarin Crimson. Thoroughly dry.
Add two coats of DecoArt Satin Varnish and let dry.
