PREPARATION
Wash and dry the item to be painted without using fabric softener. Slide the canvas panel beneath the painting surface, and secure any loose edges behind the panel using straight pins. You want the surface to be taut but not tight, and all edg- es to be secured; this will prevent them from dragging in the paint. You may want to protect the remainder of your fabric with plastic wrap.
I did not use a pattern for this painting. You can paint it on any size or shape of fabric; simply decide how large of an area you want the painting to cover and mark off the boundaries. Using a ruler measure up one-third of the way from the bot- tom of your design area, then with the charcoal pencil draw a light line across your fabric. This will be your water line and it needs to be straight. Next decide where you want your palm trees; I drew two on one side and one on the other. Again, using the ruler and the charcoal pencil, draw vertical lines for the trees. They should be narrower at the top than the bottom and should leave room for the fronds at the top. See Step 1 of the Step-by-Step on the next page. I drew the lines dark with a permanent marker for your benefit; you do not want to see them after you paint the trees and the water.
