40 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 4, 2015
Ilike to use two small palettes: one for tube colors and one for all of the mixes in order. For example, Light Yellow Mix next to Medium Yellow Mix and Dark Yellow Mix. I lay out my entire palette this way, before I begin my project. I make sure to mix
plenty of each color. This way your complete palette is available for the entire painting process. If you need to mix, your tube colors are easily accessible on the second palette. A wet palette will stay fresh and workable for a good two weeks, sometimes longer.
Inspiration for this design came from Psalm 118:24: “This is the day that the LORD has made; let us ‘Rejoice’ and be glad in it.”
PREPARATION
Sand the plate with fine-grit sandpaper. Seal with one coat of Jo Sonja’s All Purpose Sealer. When dry, sand again lightly. Use the Jo Sonja’s Sure Touch oval wash brushes for basecoating.
Basecoat the inset of the plate and the bead, carrying color over onto the back of the plate with Husk, using flow medium to thin the paint, as needed. Basecoat the rim and back of the plate Sea Swirl using flow medium again, as needed. I measured with a fabric mea- suring tape on the back of the plate and marked a line with chalk to use as a guide to paint the bead. This basecoat should be opaque. When this basecoat is dry, transfer all the pattern lines, lightly, with wax-free transfer paper.
