ACRYLIC
and, for the orange feathers, use Dark Orange Mix. The linework on the body, legs and feet is Dark Purple Mix. The linework on the barn is Carbon Black and Light Yellow Mix. The fence is lined with Raw Umber.
Moisten the surface. Float the brightest highlights on the head, neck feathers, comb, waddle, wing, body, tail feathers and saddle feathers with Light Yellow Mix. Shade the barn Dark Red Mix. Deep- en the shades in the grass with Dark Green Mix. Dry completely.
Moisten one last time and glaze the head, neck and wing with
Orange Mix.
BORDER
It is important to remember to keep the border secondary to the design. Too much color or contrast can give the border too much importance.
Retard the entire plate border. Transparently basecoat the wheat stalk with Husk. Using a no. 2 liner, line the stem and centerline on the husks with Medium Yellow Mix. Dry completely.
Moisten the rim. Stroke the base color for the leaves with Medium Green Mix; a no. 2 filbert works well. Shade and line the detail on the wheat stalks with Medium Yellow Mix. Dry completely.
Moisten the surface again. Shade and line the leaves with Dark Green Mix. Shade and line the stalks with Dark Yellow Mix. Dry completely.
Remoisten, float and line the wheat stalks and darken the shade on the leaves with Dark Purple Mix. Dry completely.
Give the entire design a coat of Jo Sonja’s Clear Glaze Medium for a barrier coat and dry. Retard the bead and rim. Using a no. 4 filber with the Dark Blue Mix, paint a stripe between the rim and the bead.
FINISHING
Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. Give the piece two coats of Jo Sonja's Clear Glaze Medium and dry overnight. Varnish with two to four coats of Jo Sonja’s Polyurethane Satin Varnish. In dry climates, you can mix water (1:1) if needed for easier application.
