14 The Decorative Painter • ISSUE NO. 4, 2016
This little collectible vase caught my eye at O’Flannary’s Em- porium in Redlands, Calif. Its simplistic lines blend well with the wild daisies that grow along our country roads here in Indiana.
When researching the history of this vase I found it to be an Abingdon Art Deco Cornucopia Vase made in the 1940-1950 period. It is part of the clean lines and bold color movement of the Art Deco period.
PREPARATION
Masonite has a slick surface that needs to be lightly sanded to allow the acrylic paint to bond to the surface. Use 220-grit sandpaper to gently sand the surface. Remove the sanding dust using a tack cloth.
Using a fine textured sponge roller, apply the first of two basecoats in Light French Blue to the surface. Roll and cross-roll until the paint achieves a smooth surface similar to eggshell. Al- low to dry thoroughly. Lightly sand and clean with tack cloth again. Apply a second basecoat in Light French Blue as you did the first. Allow to dry, preferably overnight. Lightly sand again. Transfer the design using white or grey transfer paper by slip- ping it between the surface and the line drawing.
