Annual Report for 2015-16
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
This is the
first full year of having the Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) manage our organization. I can say with confidence that it was the best move for SDP!
For several
years our financial auditors have suggested that we find a management company with
a higher level of financial expertise rather than hire
a new Executive Director. Each year the board researched
and came up without a good fit for our industry. Over two years ago in our planning it was suggested that we make an effort to network with other creative organizations to enhance the mission of SDP. We began talks with CHA about how we could network with their membership
and began to develop a plan to create a painting section within their organization. Three board members attended CHA’s annual trade event in January 2014 and met with the former CEO and the Vice President of Marketing
to begin that process. At the end of the meeting I asked
the question, “Do you know of a management company specializing in creative industries?” After a short pause, the CEO answered, “We (CHA) could be your management company.” The conversations changed and we began to look at how that would work for both organizations.
We signed the management agreement in Oct. 2014. Improvements have included greater visibility in the industry as a whole and on social media. Additional advertisers in The Decorative Painter are helping to close the gap of revenue vs. cost. We have seen better communication with our members and a wider reach of marketing efforts. Office procedures have been streamlined with more efficient oversight. We have a way to go and other changes will come, but progress
is happening. Two years ago we were on the brink of collapse. I am happy to say we are now on the road to recovery. Change will continue to be necessary to ensure the health and longevity of our beloved Society. Thank you for your continued support and passion for SDP. Our membership retention rate is higher than most other membership organizations. That says a lot for your love and devotion.
It also says a lot for the dedication and commitment of your current Board of Directors. Many have served for two or three terms in varied positions. I am honored to serve with these outstanding leaders. We are committed to the future as evidenced by planning our 2017 Conference in Daytona Beach, Fla. We realize that supporting chapters, providing fun and stimulating activities, appealing to more diverse painting styles, and attracting new members is our pathway to the ongoing health of our Society.
Much has been accomplished; much remains to be done. Do you have a passion for the success of SDP? Perhaps you should consider a leadership role!
I hope you will join us and bring all your painting friends to the 2017 “Oceans of Color” Conference in Daytona!
