   President’s Letter
Dear fellow SDP members,
During one of my travels, I was talking with a college art student who felt craft people (his term for decorative art) were beneath him. It got me to thinking – what is decorative painting, an art or a craft since both are forms of creativity? In the view of many people, they are one and the same.
According to the Oxford Living Dictionary, art is defined as “the expression of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form
such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”
Decorative painting refers to the decoration of a variety of surfaces, both functional and non-functional. For centuries, all over the world, decorative painters have embellished objects from painting on walls, on utilitarian pieces, or as with Tole painting on tin or wood. There is no end to what a decorative painter can do as you will see in the projects that are in this issue of The Decorative Painter.
Skills used in decorative painting are learned. The beginning student starts by learning the basic skills and techniques. With patience and practice, the student converts their potential of becoming a decorative painter to the achievement of being a decorative painter. This student invests time, tenacity, commitment, and passion to create uniquely decorated objects. Like the college art student, the decorative painter studies color theory, design, and various techniques of the trade. Decorative painting is an art form and has been considered an art throughout the history of art.
I am proud to be a decorative painter and thankful that we have a society of painters willing to share their time and talent to help me and others in our artful journey!
Artfully yours,
Kaye Singer
