WATER DROPS
Water drops are easy to paint if you understand their construction. A water drop is only reflected light since water has no color, therefore it’s always painted in the same hue as its background color. Thinned paint and value are the keys. The lightest value is on the inside float to create the shape of the water drop while the darker value (the back- ground color) is the float that is on the outside, matching both side- load sharp edges. It is important that the reflected light (bright spots) are placed consistently if there’s more than one drop. Look at the pho- to for help. I suggest you try painting these on a practice board before painting them on your heirloom piece.
1. Snow (Titanium) White: Sideload float top inside of each water drop, fading toward center of drop.
2. Grey Sky: Sideload float bottom inside of each water drop, fading toward center of drop.
3. Plantation Pine: Shade around drop using sideload technique.
4. Snow (Titanium) White: With very thinned paint, add highlight dots and comma-strokes following the curve of the drop.
MORE DETAIL
1. Snow (Titanium) White: Using stylus and brush end, add dots of varying sizes in filler stippling between leaves and flowers.
2. Glorious Gold: Paint beak and scrolling comma-strokes. Using stylus and brush end, add dots in varying sizes in the filler stippling between leaves and flowers with a few C-strokes to indicate shape.
FINISHING
Sign your name proudly and coat with DecoArt DuraClear Gloss Varnish. This piece is likely to be touched and held so I recommend several coats of brush-on varnish, smoothing with fine steel wool and tacking off between last two coats.

Nanette Hilton’s artwork can be found worldwide
licensed as balloons, puzzles, nutcrackers and textiles
– just to name a few. She has authored many deco-
rative painting books, children’s activity books and
trade magazine articles. She enjoys her local SDP
chapter, The Silver State Tole and Decorative Paint-
ers, having been a member since 1991. Many of
Nanette’s illustrations feature inspiring text. Echoing Thoreau’s words, Nanette believes that affecting the quality of the day is the highest of arts. When her paintbrush is dry, you might find her on her bicycle or enjoying time with her husband and their five daughters and their fami- lies.
