STEP 1: Spray the finished ink design with several very light coats of DecoArt Americana Acrylic Sealer or Krylon Kamar Varnish (if they are too heavy the ink will run). Fol-
low the instructions on the can for temperature and re- coating. This is to set the ink.
STEP 2: Spray several light coats of Krylon UV Varnish or Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch 2X Ultra Cover Gloss Varnish. This is to protect the colors and keep them from fading. STEP 3: Place in a frame with glass.
STEP 4: Clean brushes with alcohol as well as any other area that has ink on it.

Shirley Nan Ruchong cda had her first painting class in 1979 and that began a lifelong love affair with art.
From 1985 to 2012 Donna Mays and Shirley owned a Tole Shop that operated as a walk-in store and eventually
was relocated to Shirley’s home studio. Classes are still being taught there – it will probably never close! Shirley
has been a member of SDP for over 35 years and has served on many committees over the years as well as serv-
ing on the Board for two years as Board Member-at-Large. She has taught at many decorative art conferences
and has travel-taught as well. She has published her own pattern packets featuring Decorative Art designs. Oil
is her medium of choice although she also teaches in acrylics and watercolor. Shirley is now concentrating on painting from her own photographs in the contemporary realism style focusing on florals. Shirey’s Calla Lily design, Delicate Balance, was recently published in Strokes of Genius 5 – The Best of Drawing, Design and Composition published by Northlight Books. She has also been published in The Decorative Painter and Japan’s Decorative Painting Magazine. Her art is showcased in three local galleries and her Christmas ornaments reside at the Smithsonian.
