This rather suggests that my belief that William married Mary Elizabeth (née Hirst) may be misguided as she would have been around 11 years old at this point. However, an 18-year-old Sam Greenwood certainly seems possible. Thus, if Walter’s account in his letter is accurate, perhaps the puzzle is who is William’s accompanying wife?
