   A brief history
Yarra Glen
In the heart of the Yarra Valley, the picturesque Yarra Glen lies at the approximate mid-point of the Yarra River roughly 50km from its mouth and Melbourne’s CBD. Yarra Glen is home to about 3500 people, a mix of multigenerational farmers, long term township residents and newer arrivals; all enjoying a peaceful country lifestyle, many availing themselves of an easy commute to work in Metropolitan Melbourne.
The Yarra Glen story begins with the Woiworung people, who named the river that flowed through their verdant hunting grounds ‘Birrarung’, meaning ‘ever flowing’. Sometimes this indigenous name was extended to ‘Birrarung Marr’ or ‘River of Mist’. The Woiworung people are a tribe of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation, who take their name from the word wurun, meaning Manna Gum, a species of Eucalyptus that is prolific along the banks of the Birrarung or Yarra. The Woiworung hunted and fished in the Valley for some 30,000 years until European settlement reached into the Valley in the 1800s. Although an extremely hospitable tribe, this invasion resulted in some significant conflicts, such as the Battle of Yering in 1840, in the area between Warrandyte and Yarra Glen.
The conflict erupted between settler James Anderson and the Wurundjeri people over Anderson’s right to harvest a potato crop on Wurundjeri land at Warrandyte. In the ensuing standoff, clansmen moved to Yering Station at Yarra Glen, where Border Police captured Wurundjeri leader Jaga Jaga. This led to a violent confrontation between police and some 50 tribesmen. Ultimately, the tribesmen freed Jaga Jaga and retreated. In 2007 the Wurundjeri people, in conjunction with the Yarra Ranges Council unveiled a plaque to commemorate the Battle of Yering and honour the Wurundjeri tribe of the Yarra Valley at the Yarra Flats Billabongs.
