Even though Pierce had thoroughly enjoyed his time in India, a case of food poisoning forced him to return to Germany in June 1982.
“We flew back to Germany on June 23, and on my birthday, June 27, I was in Macon,” Pierce said.
And just like that, Pierce’s international trek concluded, although it certainly wasn’t the end of his artistic journey.
Pierce had actively maintained his creative endeavors while in Europe, making everything from graphics for the tofu company to painting clothes and even designing several book covers.
Pierce said having an open mind is key to a life of adventure and world travel.
“When the bus stops and the door opens, you get in, and that’s how it works,” he said. “If the situation is presented to you, you either take it or you don’t.”
