Oconee couple cycles
from coast-to-coast
By Ella Stillion Southard
At 78 years old, Barry Shettel believes in making life one big adventure.
Over the summer, Barry, his wife, Margaret, and two other friends cycled 4,000 miles from the West Coast to the East Coast, dipping their back tire into the Washington ocean and their front tire into a Maine bay.
During the several-week journey, they passed through 14 states:
Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. An added bonus to Barry’s trip is that he added all those states to his collection of license plates.
Barry’s love of cycling began at age 6 when his father gave him his first bicycle. Barry recalled, “He held onto the seat and pushed. It’s been about 73 years since then, and here I am.”
Over the summer, Barry, his wife, Margaret, and two other friends biked from the West Coast to the East Coast. Barry said he believes in making life one big adventure.
