dominate because of their low labor costs. A top-of-the-line Japanese cycle such as Honda’s Goldwing costs about $6,000. A top-of-the-line Harley costs about $8,000.”
There is a special cachet connected with owning a Harley, and it is more than the factors of costs and “the only American cycle.”
“Harley owners are enthusiasts, whereas the owners of Japanese bikes are mostly bike riders,” he says. “In the winter, Japanese bike owners tend to put up their bikes, but Harley owners are out on theirs.”
Shotton smiles and adds, “You never see anyone with Honda tattooed on his body, but you see Harley-Davidson tattooed everywhere”
Shotton and his two technicians, Ron Faust and Hugh Herrick, wear neat shop coveralls. The fourth member of the team is Karen Mappen, the parts manager.
In recent months, Shotton has branched from buying, selling, repairing, trading and out-fitting motorcycles to a new interest: customizing and restoring motorcycles.
“We are redoing ‘cycles for customers, to their specifications, so they are one-of-a- kind cycles, not like any on the road,” he says. “And we take old ‘cycles and restore them. Right now, for instance, we’re restoring a 1967 Triumph.”
As Shotton talked, there was a familiar putt-putt and heavy whizzing of a ‘cycle passing down Main Street.
“I hope to be in Oconee County working with ‘cycles for a long, long time,” he says.
