them to embody,” Palmer said. “There’s a difference in being perfect and playing with excellence.”
Palmer told the players that they don’t have to be undefeated, but they do need to play every game competitively. The Wolverines did not go undefeated. Their “daunting” 14-game schedule, as Palmer called it, was loaded with talented teams, such as powerhouses like Jefferson and Athens Academy. So, an unblemished record was never likely. But the team did find a high rate of success, as it scored 42 goals—good for an average of three goals per game.
Prince Avenue hung in with some of those big- time opponents and beat several others.
“Getting a year where we won nine games was a lot better and fun,” Tolbert said. “We all made strong bonds.”
Cooper Patton was an integral part of the 2021 middle school boys soccer team as an eighth grader.
