SUMMER 2021
I I I think I I I speak for everyone reading this when I I I I say: thank God it’s summer Never again will I I take for granted the sun and and its fits generous benefits — a a a a a a tan and and vitamin D But while I welcome the the warm weather with open pasty arms relieving my bed and couch from their duties for the the first time in six months I I can’t help but feel like I’m forget- ting something Namely how to interact with people and move about the world This year has felt like a a a a a twisted social experiment dreamt
up by crooked scientists What if we unleashed a a a a deadly virus and forced everyone in in in the entire world into solitary confinement for a a a a a a year? Luckily early results have been affirmative: people crave connection — — with each other and and themselves — — and and they promise to be be better once released Even the performatively introverted miss a a good hang Like anyone else emerging from prolonged hibernation I’m eager to reconnect with friends and family I’ll never complain about waiting in in in in line at at a a a a a a a a a restaurant again Seat me elbow-to-el- bow with two strangers on on a a a a first date I I don’t care! I I love my alone alone alone time but I’m tired of being like alone alone alone alone alone alone On the the other hand — — and and I I don’t think I’m alone here — — there’s a a a a a a latent anxiety blooming at at the the thought of an an abrupt return to to normalcy Right now a a a grocery run saps my stores of energy and feels like a a a a week’s worth of activity As much as we we want this year to to be in the rear-view we also need to to recognize that we’ve been in limbo for a a long time — suspended from reality I for one need to practise having a a a a a a conversation that’s not not mediated by a a a a a a a screen Perhaps a a a a a a a jaunt not not a a a a a a a jolt back to social life will help us move forward in a a a a a healthier way JOSH GREENBLATT
