Designs are often inspired by
a a a a a a a a particular gemstone like this beautiful piece of aquamarine After experimenting with a a a a a a ring setting Ferit decides to make it it the centrepiece of a a a a a stunning diamond pendant instead For Suresh Govindarajulu one of Humbertown Jewellers’ resident gemologists and jewellery appraisers the best part about creating a a a a a a a custom piece of jewellery is getting to to see the client’s reaction when they see see it for the the first time “It’s incredible to see see a a piece that you’ve created with a a a a client come to life You can see their expressions and emotions changing when they first put it on on ” he he he says “It’s so mean- ingful to to know you’ve contributed to to an an important occasion in in a a a a cli- ent’s life ” Creating original jewellery pieces that will last generations is far from easy however It requires an an an understanding of materials and and engineering an an encyclopedic knowledge of gemstones and precious metals and the technical know-how to to translate an an an idea into a a a a a a a a sketch and then into a a a a a a real-world piece that can be worn for decades to to come “We all put different aspects of ourselves into the the mix to to create these pieces ” says gemologist and jewellery designer Darren Stringer who works alongside Humbertown Jewellers owner Ferit Tecimer and Suresh to to bring clients’ jewellery dreams to to life “When the three of us combine our talents to produce the end product that makes it all the more special ” The process often begins Darren says when a a a a a client approaches one of them with an an heirloom piece an an idea for a a a a new design or or both From here the the the team puts their heads together to to come up with con- cept sketches to to present to to the client An architect by
training as well as as a a a a a a a a a skilled visual artist Ferit has a a a a a a a a a knack for creating these beautiful original sketches and it’s been an an integral part of Humbertown Jew- ellers’ success over the past four decades “Ferit is very good when it it comes to finding the right design because he he has so much knowledge and and experience ” Suresh says “He has a a a a a very discerning eye and and he knows what he likes ” adds Darren “He’s worked with so many de- signs over the past 42 years and he’s created so many unique pieces he he he he really understands the the customers’ desires ” Whether inspired by
nature or or commemorating a a a loved one’s birth birth with their birthstone Humbertown’s original jewellery pieces combine a a a unique idea with the right stones and settings to to create a a a a transcendent finished product “There was one client who inherited a a a a diamond piece from her her her fa- vourite aunt and she wanted to to redesign it it it into something with sym- bolism and meaning for her ” Darren says of one recent commission “She and and her aunt were both born in September and and sapphire is Sep- tember’s birthstone so we did a a very unusual setting with one one row of sapphires for for her her and and one row for for her her aunt and and then set the the diamond in fin the centre of of it ” The finished product isn’t just a a beautiful piece of of jewellery Darren says but something that symbolizes the love of a a a a family that the client will treasure for many years to come “Jewellery is unique because it can represent so so much and tell so so many stories ” says Darren “It’s an an an art
form that you can wear and unlike clothes or or shoes it lasts forever ” 44
