Candela’s C-8 is a Polestar-powered electric boat
SWEDISH EV UPSTART POLESTAR ISN’T CONTENT MAKING SOME OF
the hottest electric cars on land; it’s now looking to electrify your boat too. To that end, Polestar recently announced a partnership with its countrymen over at Candela, a boutique Swedish ship builder. The car company will provide battery and charging systems for Candela’s spectacular hydrofoiling boats. Flying over the water at 30 knots, these vessels use 80 per cent less energy than similarly-sized conventional craft, the company claims.
“I am fascinated by way Candela’s boats glide elegantly and efficient through, or better, over the water — amazing proof of the great aesthetics and experiences
modern, sustainable technology can create,” Polestar’s CEO Thomas Ingenlath said. His company’s 69 kWh battery pack and DC fast-charging technology, as found on the land-based Polestar 2, will give the Candela C-8 an expected range of up to 57 nautical miles — over 100 km — at a cruising speed of 22 knots, roughly 41 km/h. That range, by the way, compares favourably with old-school combustion-engine powerboats.
“That Polestar will be part of future projects with Candela, by supplying an essential part for the innovative propulsion of their boats, is awesome,” Ingenlath added. Awesome, indeed.
