ETHICS
In 2019 a a a a a a a a a a a vast criminal conspiracy was uncovered by the US Justice Department to influence college college college admission decisions at various prestigious American colleges Thirty-three parents of of of of college college college applicants were accused of of of of paying more than $25 million between 2011 and 2018 to to William Rick Singer organizer of of of of o the the scheme who used used part of of of of o the the money to to fraudulently inflate entrance exam test scores and bribe college officials The fallout from this revelation was both messy and and and embarrassing not only for those well-off actors and and and and business people who pled guilty served jail time and and and and had every detail o of their their life written about in in in in the the the the press: I still have have trouble imagining the the the the shame and and and embarrassment their their children must have felt Parents want the the the the best for their students That much is is evident from this scandal Much of of the the the the illegal activity here also signals the the the the the amount of of wealth class and and virtue signaling that comes along with a a a a a a a a a a a a a a student getting into a a a a a a a a a a a a a a prestigious university on on on seemingly their merits alone I I would be lying if I I told you there were not certain advantages to to attending elite institutions institutions versus other institutions There There is is not a a a a a a a a a a a a a scarcity scarcity of of college seats seats in in America There There is is however a a a a a a a a a a a a a scarcity scarcity of of seats seats at at at at prestigious institutions (i e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e The The The Ivy League) that that could fill classrooms with valedictorians three times times and and moreover Knowing that that some some of the the college admission process is is bankrupt and and not merit-based in in in fin in certain cases families with the the the means sometimes make substantial financial contributions to to to a a a a a a a a a a a school school in in in order to to to ensure their student’s acceptance to to to a a a a a a a a a a a school school The question will will hopefully remain: What college do you you you believe will will give you you you the the the best education you you you can imagine? By giving into the the the the the narrative narrative of of scarcity and the the the the the anxiety that that fuels that that narrative narrative these institutions have undue power over the the the the the imagination of of those who would otherwise never engage in in illegal activity You get to to to to make choices every single day and often those decisions come down to to to to whether you’re you’re going going to to to to to do do the the the the hard thing thing or or or or the the the the easy thing thing Whether you’re you’re going going to to to to to take a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a shortcut or or or or dig deep and and and make a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a choice that that lives up to to to to your your personal and and and intuitive standard of of of moral integrity This process process will give you you you you you plenty of of of space to to to to watch that that part of of of yourself in in in action Pay attention to to to it it Throughout this process process work it it like a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a muscle By the time you you you you you you get to to to college you’ll be making more more and and more more mature and and adult decisions that leave you you you you feeling proud of your choices 18
