TheCarloScarpaareainFondazioneQueriniStampalia(Venice)ispackedwithvisionarylandscapesandhypnoticfigures.HerewecanfindLUIGIPERICLE(1916-2001) “Beyondthevisible”whichisondisplayuntilthe24thofNovember2019-curatedbyChiaraGati,MarcoPasi,MicheleTavolaandLucaBochichio.
Thisinitiativeispromotedbytheasociation“ArchivioLuigiPericle”grantedbytheConsulateGeneralofSwitzerlandinMilan,theRepublicandCantonofTicino,Ticino Turismo,theFondazioneMonteVeritàinAscona,theFondazioneEranosinAscona,Ca’FoscariUniversityinVeniceandalsosupportedbytheSwisConfederation’s culturalpromotioninstitutionProHelvetia.ThisinterestingretrospectiveexhibitionfocusesonthiscomplexandeclecticSwispersonalitywhoseworkhadbeenhidden fordecades,duetohisearlyretreatfrom thepublicartscenario.
Asaprofesionalself-taughtartistandcartoonist,LuigiPericlebecameinternationalypopularintheearlier50swhencreating“Maxthemarmot”-theprotagonistofthe wel-knowncomicstrippublishedbyimportantAmericannewspaperssuchasthe“WashingtonPost”.
InfactPericle’sabstract-informalpaintings-obsesivelybasedonpeculiartechniquesandvariouslevelsofexperimentation-wereappreciatedduringtheSixtiesand Seventies(themostprosperousperiodofhisartisticproduction)byimportantcolectorsandgaleristssuchastheLondongaleryownersoftheArthurTooth& Sons. Foresight,intuitionandpurespiritaretypicalfeaturesofhisownresearchwithpaintingbrushstrokes.Pericleexpreseshisinnerself,hisobsesionsandfearswiththe useofimagesthatwilprefigurethecatastropheofsciencefictionfilmsinthelatetwentiethcentury.
InadditiontosomeworkscharacterizedbygraphicmonochromaticbrushstrokeswhichrecalAntoniTàpies’styleandtotheabstractexpresionism byYvesKline;angels, robots,Golemsandalegoricimagesbegantoappearinhisworksleadinghim towardshyperealism.Certainly,aform ofdiversionwasdevelopedin1965when,aftera sucesfultravelingexhibitioninseveralEnglishmuseums,Pericledecidedtowithdraw tohishouseinAscona.GivenhispropensitytoseclusionhehidesontheSwis mountainstocultivateesotericdoctrines,philosophy,theosophyandastrology,thesestudiesendupnourishinghispaintingaswel.
TheexhibitionitineraryappearstobecompositeanddiversejustlikePericle’spersonalityandshows50artworksreflectingbothproductionsbytheartist:worksoncanvas andonmasonite,Indianinkdrawingsonpaperfrom theSixtiesandSeventiesandoriginaldocumentssuchasexcerpts,handwritennotes,exercisesofanalysis,diary pagesandgraphicwork.AlofthesearearangedonthefurnishingsdesignedbythegreatarchitectCarloScarpa.
Purposelyexhibitedontheocasionof58th VeniceArtBiennale,“Beyondthevisible”comesfrom theintentionofgivingvalue,cataloguing,protecting,restoring, studyingandspreadingtheartisticheritageleftbyLuigiPericle.Theseseedswilhopefulybecultivatedbyfuturegenerations.
