Openedontheocasionofthe58th VeniceArtBiennale,theexhibition“LuigiPericle.Beyondthevisible”shedsnew light,afteraperiodofoblivion,onthe personalityofaversatileanderuditeartistwhowasamongtheprotagonistsofEuropeanpaintinginthesecondhalfofthe20th century.
From bothathematicandalinguisticpointofview thereisacleardivergencebetweentheconceptsof“visible”and“visionary”.It’sfrom thisparticulardiferencethat theexhibitionofLuigiPericle’sart(Basel1916-Ascona2001)getsundertheFondazioneQueriniStampaliainVenice.Startingfrom hiscontributiontothe“visible”form, thisexhibitionrevealsanduncoverstheartandlifeofanartistwhopreferedtoexplorethe“visionary”aspectsoftheworldtoitslimitsinordertofinditsdeepest esence.

Duetohismultifacetedpersonalityasapainter,anilustrator,ascholarandanintelectualwhowasparticularlypasionateaboutOrientalphilosophyandesotericism,in theFiftiesPericleandhiswifeOrsolinaKlaingutidecidedtosetleinAscona.
IntheTwentiesthisSwistown-morepreciselythelocationofMonteMonesciawhosenameturnedinto“MonteVerità”lateron-hostedthecommunityofpacifists, anarchists,theosophists,poets,bohemians,anthroposophists,vegetariansandfeministswhichhadbeenfoundedbyIdaHofmannandHeinrichOedenkovenin1900.This backgroundrepresentedtheobject/subjectoftheexhibitioncuratedbyHaraldSzeemannin1978.
Asortoflocusamoenus(Latinfor"pleasantplace")wherePericlefoundshelterafterfleeingfrom thecultureofappearanceandfrom theartsystem,inordertoimmerse himselfintoanotherdimension,closertospiritualdynamicsandnature.

ThiseventheldintheCarloScarpaarea(FondazioneQueriniStampalia)describesPericle’slifeandcareerviaanexhibitionofhispaintingsoncanvas,hismasonites,the IndianInksonpaper,drawings,notesandpagesfrom adiary.Startingfrom “Maxthemarmot”(protagonistofthecomicstripinventedbyPericlehimself).
Theocurencedisplayshoroscopes,astrologicalchartsandabstractpaintingswhichseem todenyfigurativism.AlthoughPericle’spersonalstylegotitsinspirationfrom themesandcharacterswhichcamefrom thestudyofOccidentalandOrientalphilosophies,ritualsanddoctrines.
Itlookslikeanalchemicconiunctiooppositorum (coincidenceofopposites)whichexpresesitselfwithinandbeyondboththevisibleandvisionaryformsofart.
