Fake News – Lessons from History for the AI age
Year 10 had an assembly this term focused on the history and impact of fake news. Students learned
about notable incidents, the spread of misinformation, and the importance of fact-checking. The
assembly aimed to educate students on critical thinking and responsible media consumption.
The assembly highlighted several notable recent
incidents fuelled by false information which included
the “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory during the 2016
U.S. presidential election and the 2024 riots in
England and Northern Ireland.
Students were invited to consider the rapid spread
of false information and its potential consequences.
As Jonathan Swift once said, “Falsehood flies,
and the Truth comes limping after it”. This quote
underscores the importance of verifying information
before accepting it as true. The presentation also
addressed the role of social media in amplifying
misinformation and the responsibility of individuals
to fact-check and think critically.
Students reflected on the dangers of fake news and
the importance of responsible media consumption.
By understanding the history and impact of
misinformation, we all can become more discerning
consumers of information and contribute to a more
informed society.
