Learning Support
Some students may wish to make use of an additional option run by the Academic Access and Achievement Department.
These sessions, aimed at those with additional needs, would be used to reinforce foundational skills in English and Mathematics. Their purpose is to improve confidence and coherence in not only the syllabi, but in the skill sets associated with these areas of the curriculum.
Fundamental skills – such as proofreading, effective punctuation, numerical operations and formula applications – often need reiterating, reviewing and applying, especially for those with further needs. Small group, core intervention
can be used to facilitate this. In the English sessions, support would focus on improving inference ability, developing written expression and understanding
how to deconstruct literature. In Maths, the sessions would consider methods of approaching subtopic areas, at a slower pace, with plenty of opportunity for practice and reinforcement to solidify understanding. These sessions are prepared and organised with the Heads of Department and core subject teachers, in order to ensure the right support is provided and students can target the areas they need to develop further.
This may be a more suitable choice for a student with additional needs, who may not necessarily need such a broad scope of options. This option allows the student to benefit from three hours of structured support (a fortnight) rather than two hours of 1:1, with specialised staff from the Academic Access and Achievement Department, in direct collaboration with subject teachers. In light of this support being part of their timetable, in the place of one of the student’s options, unlike 1:1 lessons, there is no charge for these additional, academic lessons.
If you would like your son/daughter to take part in these lessons, then please contact Mrs Butler (sbutler@seaford.org) and Mr d’Agar (sdagar@seaford.org) directly.
