Overview
A Level Environmental Science offers a multi-disciplinary
approach to learning combining both humanities and the
sciences. If you have a passion for learning about a variety of
scientific processes, global issues and have a passion to be
a global ambassador to future generations on all matters of
sustainability this is the course for you. You will learn about
popular and contemporary topics including climate change,
the physical environment, and the circular economy and
historical environmental challenges facing our planet.
Course content
This course is split into 7
modules. Please note that
research methods will be
covered throughout the
course.
Paper 1
The physical environment,
energy resources,
pollution & research

3-hour exam

Paper 2
The living environment,
biological resources,
sustainability and research
methods
3-hour exam
120 marks
50% of A level
Expectations
During contact time
in lessons students are
expected to eagerly
participate in theory lessons
and be prepared to carry
out fieldwork and practical
lessons with vigour. Outside
of lessons students will
be provided with reading,
workbooks and past paper
questions to embed exam
techniques and ensure
consistent and regular
knowledge recall.
Future pathway
Environmental Science
is a highly regarded
qualification and will allow
you to apply for a variety of
courses at university such
as International Disaster
Management, Marine
Biology, Earth Sciences,
Planetary Science, Geology,
Agriculture, Engineering,
Research & Development
and Development.
Environmental science
is a facilitating subject
as it’s highly respected
by employers and by
universities, notably
Russel Group universities,
with it opening doors
to futures in ecology,
wildlife conservation, law,
consultancy and energy
sectors. Furthermore, the
environmental science job
market is rapidly growing,
and career prospects
include environmental
management,
environmental protection
officers, environmental
consultancy, conservation
and policy making.
Key skills
Over the course, the
students will need to
develop the following skills:
Practical skills
Such as population studies,
ecology studies and looking
at invasive species!
Mathematical skills
To be able to calculate
changes to datasets, means,
ratios, percentages and
other basic numerical and
statistical analysis at a level
equivalent to higher level
GCSE mathematics.
Problem solving
To scrutinise information
and reach conclusions based
upon working through
information. Such as exciting
environmental issues such
as climate change and
endangered species!
Recommended entry
requirements
Grade 6-6 at GCSE (Biology,
Chemistry or Physics) or
Combined Science and
grade 6 in geography.
