Course Content
Component 1: Performance and Choreography
Solo performance linked to a specified practitioner within an area of study
Performance in a quartet Group choreography How it’s assessed
Practical exam 80 marks
50% of A Level
It is marked live by an external assessor from AQA
Component 2: Critical Engagement
Knowledge, understanding and critical appreciation of two set works.
One compulsory set work within the compulsory area of study
One optional set work within the corresponding area of study, from a choice of four.
Overview
Dance A Level is a dynamic qualification which encourages students to develop their creative and intellectual capacity. Students study a wide range of unique and exciting contemporary dance practitioners, both practically and theoretically. This course reflects both historical and current dance practices, making it more relevant, and inspires a lifelong passion and appreciation for dance.
How it’s assessed
Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes
100 marks
50% of A Level
Questions: Two sections:
Section A: short answer questions (25 marks) and one essay question (25 marks) on the compulsory set work/area of study.
Section B: two essay questions on the second set work/area of study (25 marks for each essay).
Expectations
It is expected that students will be able to work independently, as well as creatively in a team. It is also expected that students will have studied Dance before, have a passion for different styles of Dance and have strong performance skills and technique.
Future pathway
This course is excellent preparation for students who would like to pursue
a career in Dance, or to study Dance further in higher education, with possible future career paths including dancer, Dance teacher, fitness trainer and physiotherapist.
Key skills
Students will need to be self- motivated and committed to achieving their best. Students will also need a sound ability to construct an essay, and critically analyse professional works.
Recommended entry requirement
Grade 6 or above in GCSE Dance and GCSE English Language
