GCSE Design and Technology
Design and Technology is an exciting and evolving area of study. Good design
affects the way we live, from the products that we buy, the houses and the
environment that we live in and, essentially, is present in all areas of day-to-day
life. Combining many elements from Art, Science, Maths and ICT, the subject
offers a range of exciting projects exploring materials, processes, CAD and
CAM to create products and prototypes. The portfolios produced are highly
regarded by higher education and employers when applying for the next step
in a student’s life.
Course Outline:
The course consists
of 2 major assessed

1. Written examination
(50% of the course, 2hr
written examination)
• Section A – Core
technical principles
A mixture of multiple
choice and short
answer questions
assessing a breadth of
technical knowledge
and understanding
• Section B – Specialist
technical principles
Several short answer
questions (2–5 marks)
and one extended
response to assess
a more in depth
knowledge of technical
principles
• Section C – Designing
and making principles
A mixture of short
answer and extended
response questions
2. Non-examination
assessment (NEA) (50%
