Your choices
Something that is right for you
At Seaford, all students study Mathematics, English and Science. Mathematics and Science are offered
at both higher tier and foundation tier level, and the decision as to the best tier to pursue is taken over the duration of the GCSE course with your teachers.
In English, students study English Language and English Literature within their normal lessons. Science can be studied as a Combined Science course (worth two GCSEs) or as a Triple Science course (worth 3 GCSEs). This decision is made at the end of Year 9 between the Science department, parents and the students.
Each student then has four option subjects. We would expect at least one of these choices
to be a humanities subject. We also encourage students to study a modern foreign language, but it is not compulsory.
It is important that students study a balanced curriculum which keeps future choices of Sixth Form subjects broad. There are a very small number of Russell Group universities which require a modern foreign language. If you have queries about this then please get in contact with us.
We encourage you to take into account the balance of coursework a subject has. We would not usually allow students to study more than two coursework heavy subjects such as DT and one of the Art based courses. You can see the balance of coursework in each course on page 3.
Ultimately, we want you to choose subjects that you will enjoy and be passionate about. Sometimes there is a tendency to select an option because there is a career aspiration in mind but actually the subject
is not a good fit for you. Whilst we recognise career aspiration is important, we would also suggest that a lot can change in the years ahead, and that choosing subjects that you love should be a guiding priority.
The most important thing is to talk your choices through with your subject teachers and tutors who are here to help you. Take your time with this and choose the best fit for you which enables you to succeed and achieve your personal bests!
