Fringe Benefit Calculation
How are Fringe Benefits Calculated on a Fed/Non-Fed Grant?
Overview
Fringe Benefits charged to a department or grant follow either the federal grant or non-federal grant
calculation rates. Ideally, the type of fringe benefit calculation is determined at the beginning of a grant.
However, there are instances where a grant award has yet to be approved but there is still a need to calculate
fringe benefits for staff working on the project.
When the award type is changed from fed to non-fed or vice a versa, the fringe benefits needs to be
recalculated. Compass makes these changes automatically for current and past fringe calculations. The Emory
Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) facilitates the status change when notified by the project manager.
Changes to fringe calculations do not change the pay of employees. It does change how the project or department is
charged for fringe benefits.
