home renovation has lots of moving parts, and a different expert, professional or tradesperson to handle each one. So, in what is undoubtedly a very long list, who should you hire first? As a designer, I’m admittedly biased in my renovation opinions, but I stand firm that you should hire your designer first, and here are three solid reasons why.
The Big Picture
When you choose to hire a designer, you have the benefit of working with someone who is invested in the whole design process, from start to finish. Your designer brings their practiced perspective to each project, anticipating your needs and wants as the homeowner, while planning ahead for any challenges that may come up – and they will come up. Your designer will plan each space within the broader context on the home and even the surrounding environment/geography. Depending on the designer you choose, they may even handle exterior design, collaborating with architects and homebuilders. And then there’s the designer’s Little Black Book of resources. This brings me to my next point...
Connections
The designer is there to do the heavy lifting for the client. I don’t mean lugging construction materials and power tools. Actually, it’s more like juggling. What I’m referring to is the big job of construction coordination. Experienced designers bring a lot to the table, including established relationships with tried and trusted trades, and reputable suppliers. Getting a construction project running smoothly – let alone bring it to a finish – is no simple task. This is especially the case if you’ve never experienced a renovation first-hand. Meanwhile, an experienced designer has taken charge on many projects and has likely assembled an army of real-deal pros to lean into, who specialize in the type of work you need. The whole process goes more smoothly, and to top it off, your designer may also be able to get a better rate on materials, products and services.
On Track, On Budget, On Time
Each project has three objectives: to stay on track in terms of the design vision, budget and timeline. Your designer’s role is to keep them in balance. A renovation can quickly go off the rails, and trust me, it doesn’t take much to throw things out of alignment. A seemingly minor delay on your kitchen cabinets (yes, supply chain issues are still a factor!) of even a couple of weeks has a domino effect that can impact that can cost you time and money, not to mention your precious sanity.
If you’re planning a home renovation and plan to engage a designer like myself , do yourself a favour and do so early in the process. This ensures a seamless design and construction process, and ultimately, a home in harmony with your life. Happy Renovating !
