population grew and more water was needed, a large scale aqueduct was constructed that brought water from the side of Mount Carmel, about ten kilometres away, and flowed on a single raised canal.
Caesarea was under Crusader control in the 12th and 13th centuries. The city hosted gladiator games and theatrical productions in its ampitheatre. Today, the theatre has been restored and during the summer regularly presents concerts of both local and international acts.
HAIFA
With a history spanning more than 3,000 years, Haifa is Israel’s third largest city after Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. It plays an important role in Israel’s economy as home to one of the oldest and largest high-tech parks in the country.
Haifa is home to the Bahá'í World Centre with its golden- domed Shrine of the Báb and the surrounding gardens. It is the name given to the spiritual and administrative centre of the Bahá'í faith, a religion teaching the essential worth of all religions, and the unity and equality of all people. As well, it is a destination for Bahá'í pilgrims.
During the Crusader rule, religious hermits inhabited the caves on Mount Carmel, and in the 13th century formed the Carmelites, a new Catholic monastic order. The Stella Maris Monastery is located on the slopes of Mount Carmel and reserved for monks. Located higher up on Mount Carmel is a monastery of the same name that is reserved for nuns.
SAFED
Safed, or Tsfat, is the highest city in the Galilee. It is considered one of Judaism’s four holy cities along with Jerusalem, Hebron and Tiberias. The city flourished in the 16th century when many famous religious scholars and mystics moved here fleeing the Spanish Inquisition. It was here that the first printing press in the Middle East was set up, publishing the first Hebrew book printed in Israel.
The Artists’ Quarter was originally established by artists escaping Europe during and after World War II. Its labyrinth of narrow cobblestone alleys and steep stone stairways contain a number of art galleries and artists’ studios.
