 On June 11 of 2019, Dr. Nick Nichols was selected by the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) to represent the Department of Occupational Safety and Health at Southeastern by participating in a Plenary Session Town Hall Panel. The Panel was held at ASSP’s annual Safety 2019 national conference. The conference was held in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Town Hall Session was entitled “Where Do You Draw the Line? Navigating the Expanding Scope of the Safety Professional.” Approximately 3800-4200 safety professionals from all areas of the field, and all over the nation were in attendance. The discussion, which included an audience question and answer section, covered topics such as workplace violence, the ethical values of safety professionals in the new millennium, worksite safety and its accompanying liability, professional certifications and their respective codes of conduct as they affect the modern safety professional.
Members of the Panel also included Mr. Brad D. Giles, P.E., CSP of Bradley Giles and Associates; Arthur Schwartz, CAE Deputy Director and General Counsel, National Society of Professional Engineers Executive Director (seated next to Dr. Nichols during the session); Teresa M. Turnbeuagh, PhD, MBA, CSP, ASP, CET, CAE, IOM, Chief Executive Officer, Board of Certified Safety Professionals. The Panel Moderator was Mrs. Stephanie M. Gurnari, CSP, Risk Engineering Service Branch Manager, Chubb.
