statutes. I would be surprised if Henderson filed trespassing charges against you. He'll be too busy trying to find a new place to hide his stash.” The deputy looked Neil up and down. “Do you need me to take you the emergency room? You should get those cuts cleaned up and that ankle looked at.”
“No,” Neil said. “I’ll be okay. Thank you.”
“You can thank me by keeping that jar sealed and getting out of my county.” The deputy got back in the SUV and pulled away .
Neil opened the trunk of the car. He sat the urn inside it before rummaging through his suitcase for his shaving kit and a handkerchief. He doused the handkerchief with aftershave and was tentatively dabbing at the cut on his chin when a familiar pickup pulled to a stop on the road next to him.
“You okay, mister,” Jacob said through the open window. He and his brother had both cleaned up since he had seen them earlier. They wore clean shirts and similar, but cleaner, hats.
“I’m still alive,” Neil said, “and I suspect I have you two to thank for that. It was you that called the deputy?”
“Yeah,” Jacob said. “Sorry ‘bout that, but we were worried.” “Old man Henderson can be a scary cus,” Leon added. “No,” Neil said, “don’t apologize. You probably saved
my life.”
“So, were able to lay your mama to rest?” Jacob asked.
Neil picked up the urn. “No, I still have her.”
“What you gonna do now?” Leon asked.
Neil looked down at the battered urn. “I suppose I am going
to take her back home with me.”
“That’s good,” Leon said. “Family should be together.”
The brothers pulled away leaving Neil to wonder how he
was going to tell his wife that mother was coming to stay with them.
