Confessions of a Top 100 Radiology Group
How an independent East Coast radiology group with 39 rads implemented a Unified Radiology Worklist to dramatically improve quality and efficiency
Dr. Mike Brown, Partner with Carolina Radiology Associates explained his group’s journey from the days of film reading to implementation of a Unified Radiology Worklist in 2018. The practice identified three strategic objectives:
1. Invest in the right technology for efficient radiologist workflow
2. Control the data to improve medical billing and collections as well as show the value of radiology to the hospitals and other providers
3. Build relationships versus black boxes with a good TAT
The following factors pushed them to action:
Lost productivity
• Existing Rads became frustrated, jumping between systems
• New Rads took 6-9 months to even approach their capabilities
Difficulty providing subspecialty coverage
• Created workarounds to move exams between systems
• Some exams waited for subspecialist to staff bunker (on-call, weekend, after-hours)
• Numerous requests for addenda when comparisons at different hospitals were not known at time of dictation
“We had to figure out how to work smarter, not harder.”
