GIRLS BASKETBALL RECAP
VARSITY BASKETBALL
Varsity girls’ basketball finished a very successful winter season with a record of 18-9. The team was led by seniors Mary Schleusner and Maddie Shannon. They each finished first or second on the team in nearly every major statistical category, while also both being named to the All-Conference team and the North Carolina Private School All-Star game. Highlights of the season included an early season road victory at Durham Academy, an undefeated Christmas tournament at St. Pius in Atlanta, and a home playoff victory over Covenant Day School. This team took the first step to rebuilding a great program at Charlotte Latin.
JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL
The JV girls’ basketball team had a very successful season on the court, finishing 2nd in the conference with a record of 11-4. High- lights included a big win against rival Providence Day and an incredible win in a double OT thriller against Country Day. We were led by our juniors Anya Amin and Cindy Minnig, both 3-year members of the JV program who have grown into talented basketball players and incredible leaders for our team. We will miss you next year!! Our sophomore returning players Mary Stewart, Lydia, and Anna were huge for us this year! And newcomers, freshmen Syd, Bridget, Casey, and Natalia brought a lot of talent, personality, and energy. They worked really hard and showed incredible improvement over the course of the season – the future’s so bright!! A special thanks to our varsity swing players, freshmen Alison, Maggie, Alex, Wallace, and Eleanor.
8TH GRADE BASKETBALL
The 8th grade girls’ basketball team is a group of hard-working, dedicated and caring young ladies. They ended their season with an impressive record of 9-2. The girls were so competitive, pushing each other during every practice to improve their skills. Our guards: Charlotte Tune, Holden Gore, Lindsey Boone, Georgia Hume, Hayden Proffitt, Abbie Burns, Marion DuBose, Brooke Proffitt, and Drue Amin would play such pressure defense that often our opponents went for long stretches without being able to score. Our forwards: Louise Wyche, Jane McAuley, Morgan McLaughlin, Mollie Snyder and Riley Hill dominated the boards, pulling down defensive rebounds and getting many put-backs on offense. All of the girls were excellent teammates and celebrated one anoth- er’s successes. We all enjoyed our postgame chat where the girls would gather in the locker room and share their thoughts and compliment their teammates. We feel very fortunate to have been able to coach such a special group of girls. The future of Hawks basketball is bright!!
7TH GRADE BASKETBALL
The 7th grade girls’ team came into the season without a lot of experience and struggled a bit in the early stages of the season. However, the girls learned quickly about playing with intensity and purpose. For instance, one of the hallmarks of their improvement was their response to being pressed by the opposition, as teams found that what worked at the beginning of the season did not work as well as the season progressed. More than one team felt compelled to call off its press entirely due to its ineffectiveness against the Latin girls. A three-game winning streak in the middle of the season gave the Hawks confidence, and their improved quality of play against teams they had previously faced revealed the breadth of their improvement. With commitment in the off-sea- son, and belief in themselves, the girls have a bright future ahead.
SENIOR NIGHT GIRLS BASKETBALL
“You’re nervous? Don’t be nervous. Be excited to step on the court know- ing you could not do anything more to prepare yourself than the work you have done.”
