TENNIS RECAP
NINA LAVELLE - CAPTAIN
It is unusual to be singing the praises
of a star tennis player whose best sport isn’t even tennis! Such is the athletic excellence of Nina Lavelle. Nina has been front and center on the courts since her freshman year, leading the Hawks to 4 dominant years for the CLS tennis program, including back-to-back State Championships in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Nina only has a handful of losses in singles and doubles over the last 4 years, largely due to her aggressive baseline play, smothering net game, and the superb movement on the court. Nina
is also a leader off the court, serving as one of tennis’ SALT representatives and
a captain this year. Nina’s fun, indepen- dent, and easygoing personality makes her universally popular with her team- mates. She is a friend to all and admired by her fellow Hawks and her opponents alike. Nina will be attending the Univer- sity of Richmond as a member of their track team this Fall. There will never be another Nina Lavelle...she is one of a kind!
VARSITY TENNIS
This was a very satisfying season for the team and a great finish. Having lost four seniors from last year’s team, it was time to see what this new group would be able to do. With a very deep team and strong chemistry, we competed well in singles and figured out who would play doubles together. A highlight of the regular season was beating CCDS on their home courts after losing to them at Latin earlier in the season. We achieved our performance goals of winning the CISAA conference and the NCISAA State Championship by working hard on the daily goals of strong effort, improvement each day, and believing and supporting each other!
JUNIOR VARSITY TENNIS
The ‘21 Latin Girls JV tennis team ended this fall with a record of 9 wins and 2 loss- es.throughout the season, and contributed one or more wins to the team’s record. Sophomore Madilyn Wargo and freshman Maddie Larsh deserve recognition for their performance: Wargo played Line 1 in singles and doubles (with various partners), re- cording 16 wins with no losses. Larsh’s superb management of doubles play secured wins in 9 of 11 matches played with different partners. Juniors Kayla Tillman, Kate Godwin and Joy Boyake’s loyalty to the team and maturity are appreciated as they made both practices and matches fun. It was a good team and a fun season!
MIDDLE SCHOOL TENNIS
Our girls’ Middle School tennis team finished strong by winning our playoff tourna- ment after a tough season. Kudos to Naomi Randall, who battled through most of the season with a broken wrist and turned an obstacle into an opportunity by developing a one-handed backhand slice. We could not have managed without the four sixth graders who worked so hard and made the entire team sharper. Their experience in competition was a huge bonus for us. Ivy Brown and Vivian Randall took turns play- ing number two singles and both had great records against formidable opponents. Reynolds Burns pulled out some amazing doubles wins, pairing up with Naomi. Ella Hennessy, and the Hawks are fortunate these four girls will be returning next year.
