      KENNON ACKS
In our preseason survey, Kennon chose these three words to describe the attributes that make a great team: support, chemistry, and brotherhood. Clearly, it’s the bonds with his team- mates that have made an impact on Kennon, but he has given as much
– or more – than he’s received. That was evident last year, when Kennon achieved his first state qualifying times while the entire team screamed its support from the sides and end of the pool. He is unfailingly good-na- tured, bringing a lightness to practices and meets, making even tough sets seem easier, and approaching unde- sirable performances with a “we’ll get it next time” attitude. In addition to swimming, Kennon played varsity soc- cer in the fall and will compete in the throwing events for track and field in the spring. He is also involved in band, debate, Habitat for Humanity, and the Mecklenburg County Teen Court. His commitment to the Strength Center this season has undoubtedly paid off and will serve him well in the future.
RYAN BEAM-CAPTAIN
Ryan is a Latin lifer who has been on the swim team since the 7th grade. He started swimming in summer league when he was only 4 years old, and now Ryan is sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with other young kids just starting out. Ryan is a three-time state championship qualifier whose exceptional work ethic, consistency at practice and ability to push himself is admired by his teammates. Ryan not only loves the camaraderie and inclu- siveness of the swim team – he helps foster it, leading to his election as a team captain this year.
BRENDAN BUCCI
Brendan entered Latin in the ninth grade and qualified for states right off the bat, using his former club swimming skills to propel him to success in the sprint freestyle events, backstroke and breaststroke. This year, he even added the 200 IM to his repertoire. Although he describes himself as quiet, Bucci is very well-liked among his teammates and has grown into a natural role as a team leader. He has also grown into his long and tall frame and is still learn-
ing to use his height and length to his advantage in the pool. His favorite part of Latin swimming has been the state meet trips and the friendships he’s de- veloped. In addition to the swim team, Brendan runs cross country and track, has worked for Habitat for Humanity, and has earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
