trometercouldetectsuchaweaksignal.Evenanopticaldensityof8isbeyondcomercialyavailable machines.Thus,suchparticlesaresentialy10%absorbingofthelightfailingonthemoveravery widerangeofwavelengthsprovidingthatitisnotreflectedorscatered.Moreover,thelightwilbetotaly absorbedveryneartothesurface.Thishasimportantimplicationsforthemechanismtobediscused later.Acordingly,wehaveresortedtodifusereflectancespectroscopywhichisasimpletechnique measuringacombinationofscateredandreflectedlighti.e.measuringthelosoflightavailableforthe absorptionproces.Thistechniquealowsreadycomparisonofthespectroscopicbehaviourofdiferent laserfrequenciesacrosthespectrum.Forthepurposesofcomparisonwithliquidphaseabsorptionspec- traonlywepresentsomeofthesereflectancespectraintheform(1-reflectance).
ThegeneralcharacteristicsofpulsedlasersusedintatoremovalareshowninTable1.Hereitis clearthat,whilethemaximumenergydensities(fluences)fortheselasersdonotvarygreatly,thefluxcan varybyfiveordersofmagnitude.Phenomenarelatedtothefluxwilthusvarygreatlywithlasertype.
