Neil Armstrong
On July 20, 1969, millions of people around the world turned on their TVs to see Neil A. Armstrong, an American astronaut, walk on the moon for the first time.
He was the pilot of a spaceship called Apollo 11, which took off on July 16, 1969.
As he stepped on the moon’s surface he spoke his famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
How did he become an astronaut?
Neil Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Ohio. They say he was always interested in airplanes; he even began taking flying lessons at the young age of fourteen.
He was fascinated with outer space; he loved to look at the stars and the moon.
He became a Navy pilot and was even sent to the Korean War in 1950.
In 1962, he entered NASA to become an astronaut. His first trip to space was on Gemini 8 in 1966 with David R. Scott.
