4. Homophones and Homographs
Homophones
The word homophone comes from the Greek root HOMO which means “same” and PHONE which means “sounds”.
Therefore, Homophones are words that sound the same, but have a different spelling and meaning.
Examples:
Ate: Past tense of eat. Eight: Number
Yesterday I ate fish.
My favorite number is eight.
Board: A piece of wood. Bored: Not being amused.
I need a cutting board to cut my vegetables. I don’t have anything to do, I am bored.
Buy: To acquire something by paying for it. By: near
I am going to buy honey to put in my tea. The bear is by the ball.
Flour: A soft powder made of wheat or another grain. Flower The colored part of the plant.
