5. Writing Workshop Descriptive Writing
• A description creates a picture of what the author is describing. It tells what he sees, tastes, hears, smells, and feels.
Adjectives will make your writing more interesting. You can use adjectives to add details to your writing.
Read the paragraph below.
"I see a pretty young woman, who looks at me and moves her lips as if talking, and who wears—what a wonderful thing! A blue dress exactly like mine."
Now, read it without adjectives.
"I see a woman, who looks at me and moves her lips as if talking, and who wears—what a thing! A dress exactly like mine."
• The first paragraph helps you imagine what the writer wants to say, you know the woman is pretty and young and that she is wearing a wonderful, blue dress. Adjectives help you imagine what the author wants to transmit.
• In the second paragraph you do not know if the woman is young or old, if she is pretty or ugly, if the dress is wonderful or horrible, you don’t even know what color it is.
