Adding –er and –est
The comparative form of an adjective is the one that compares two
things or people. We form it by adding –er to the adjective.
The superlative form of an adjective is the one that compares more
than two things or people. We form it by adding –est to the adjective. Most of the time we just add –er or –est to the adjectives.
ExAMPLES:
The red headed boy is a fast runner.
He is faster than Billy. He is the fastest of us all.
The exceptions are:
1. consonant + y = change the y to an i + er/est
ExAMPLES:
angry angrier angriest
2. consonant + e= remove the e + er/est ExAMPLES:
wide wider widest
3. consonant + vowel + consonant = double the last consonant + er/est
ExAMPLES:
hot hotter hottest
