• Adverbs are words that modify verbs.
• They describe the verb.
• An adverb will often answer the questions when, where or
how an action happens.
• Some adverbs are formed by adding -ly at the end of an
adjective.
ExAMPLES:
Hades suddenly emerged, thundering across the plain.

• Suddenly is modifying emerged.
Demeter did sometimes show a capacity for mercy. •Sometimes is answering when?
Demeter wandered aimlessly through town after town. •How did Demeter wander?
