Language. Six Troublesome Verbs
• There are six verbs in English that cause confusion when using them.
These are the troublesome verbs:
lie & lay
sit & set rise & raise
lie and laY
The verb LIE means to rest, to recline, or to be in place. The verb LIE does not take a direct object. The verb LAY means to put (something) in place. The verb LAY takes a direct object.

Examples:
Please lie down.
The packages are lying here.
The necklace lay on the wardrobe.
The precious jewel had lain on the drawer for months. Please lay the umbrella down.

Mathilda laid the necklace on the dresser.
Her husband had laid the old papers on the table.
