 • A preposition that is made up of two or more words is called a compound preposition.
The following list gives you the most commonly used compound prepositions in English.
    according to
   in addition to
 instead of
  because of
  in front of
   on account of
  by means of
   in spite of
  prior to

Examples:
Long, long ago, in a beautiful part of this country, there lived an Indian with his wife and children.
Though needy he was kind and contented and always gave thanks to the Great Spirit for everything that he received.
NOTE: As a preposition, the word to precedes a noun or a pronoun to form a prepositional phrase. Do not confuse such a prepositional phrase with an infinitive which is a verb form preceded by to.
