3. Adverbs
• Adverbs are words that describe a verb or an adjective.
Adverbs can describe how, when, where, and to what degree an action happens.
When (adverbs of time)
now, tomorrow, yesterday, soon, already
Where (adverbs of place)
outside, anywhere, inside, in, somewhere, out, everywhere
How (adverbs of manner)
carefully, quietly, slowly, well, easily, fast
To what extent
extremely, somewhat, much, too
Examples:
Such idea never occurred to the prince. (Adverb of time) When did the idea occur? Never
The prince looked everywhere for the bulrushes. (Adverb of place) Where did the prince look? Everywhere
Ilonka carefully whispered in the prince´s ear. (Adverb of manner) How did Ilonka whisper? Carefully
How sad was she? Extremely sad when she thought he did not care for her. (Adverbs of extent)
