3. Pronouns What you know:
• Pronouns are the part of speech used to replace one or more nouns. • One of the purposes of pronouns is to avoid repeating the
same noun over and over again.
Examples of pronouns:
he she it we they you I meweus him her
Example:
Kings and princes disputed over the kingdom. They all wanted to take over. Pronoun Antecedent Agreement
An antecedent is the word or words, phrase, or clause to which the pronoun refers to.
Example:
Kings and princes disputed over the kingdom. They all wanted to take over. • The nouns kings and princes are the antecedent of they.
                                       Remember:
• A singular pronoun must replace a single noun.
• A plural pronoun must replace a plural noun.
• The pronoun should also agree in gender with its antecedent.
